Education Analytics (EA) is a non-profit organization that uses rigorous data analysis to inform education research, management, and policy decisions. Our staff is a group of highly motivated, energetic, passionate analysts and researchers who work with school districts, states, and foundation partners across the U.S. to identify innovative ways to improve education systems.

We are seeking an experienced finance professional with a history of successful financial management in the non-profit or government contractor sector. The Financial Controller will provide consistently high quality and innovation to Education Analytics while being responsible for the accounting operations of the company. The controller will undertake high-level accounting, financial risk management, day-to-day internal finances, budget and forecast preparation, and assist with development of internal control policies, procedures, and financial planning. The position will report to the Director of Finance and Accounting and will take a leadership role in directing and implementing EA’s financial strategies.

Location: Madison area strongly preferred with the ability to work a hybrid schedule on a regular basis (in-office & remote)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand processes and controls related to the accounting system that provides the organization with quick access to financial information and enables strategic budgeting
  • Manage all aspects of accounting; billing, financial statements, general ledger, cost accounting, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, budgeting, tax compliance, inventory accounting, cost accounting, revenue recognition, and various special analyses
  • Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies, procedures, and internal controls
  • Transactions
    • Ensure that Accounts Payable are paid and Accounts Receivable are collected in a timely manner.
  • Assist in processing payroll
  • Perform periodic bank reconciliations and credit card reconciliations.
  • Maintain all general ledger entries, and ensure accuracy.
  • Implement and maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Reporting
    • Issue timely and complete financial statements
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of company operations
  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits, providing information to external auditors.
  • Leads year end audit with external audit firm.
  • Leads and participates in special projects.
  • Support month-end and year-end close process
  • Complies with GAAP standards, federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Leads year end audit with external audit firm.
  • Leads and participates in special projects.
  • Manage and mentor junior personnel in the accounting department

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration

  • 5+ years of related work experience
  • Preference given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant Masters in Accounting.

Travel Requirements

  • Minimal local travel may be required.
  • Valid driver’s license is required.

Physical Requirements (general requirements)

  • Ability to use computers daily in an interactive manner for extended periods of time and up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to sit for an extended period of time.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and up to 6 hours at a time.
  • Ability to frequently and accurately communicate with employees, customers, and vendors in person, via the telephone or by email.
  • Constant walking or motion to coordinate work and interact with co-workers.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
